According to a study by UNICEF, the children in the most degraded and dangerous situations, even compared to their peers in rural areas, are the hundreds of millions living in “urban slums” (neighborhoods
For this reason, Nasara has been committed to education for over ten years.
In 2013, we opened a Kindergarten and later a Primary School in the Social Center in the Djicofè slum.
As of today:
- 200 children attend the kindergarten, 35% of whom belong to socially disadvantaged families;
- 433 children attend the primary school, 30% of whom belong to socially disadvantaged families;
- 23 children who graduated from primary school and come from disadvantaged families are now attending middle schools in the neighborhood, thanks to our association, which covers their school fees;
- About 200 people eat hot meals every day prepared by our kindergarten kitchen;
- About 140 primary school students eat hot meals every day prepared by the canteen, which we have entrusted to a women’s association;
- 20 employees are regularly hired by the center, including teachers, guards, a cook and assistant, and a gardener.
We help children and, at the same time, support the social fabric in which they grow up
We believe that the results we are achieving go far beyond the impact on individual children, but also stimulate the growth of the entire neighborhood:- School hours free mothers and other women who care for the children from traditional roles, allowing them to do small jobs that help support the family economy.
- We help the integration of children with disabilities into the social context, providing them with concrete assistance to reduce the effects of their conditions.
- We provide financial and administrative support for the registration of children with the civil registry, reducing the phenomenon of invisibility for many children in relation to health and educational services.
- We manage a library and a study hall accessible after sunset where everyone, even adults, can study freely.
- We provide free basic services: electricity, drinking water, showers, and primary medical care.
For each child, an individualized educational plan is adopted in agreement with the relevant social services.
